In logo design, however, it\u2019s called copyright infringement and that\u2019s a big no-no.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, that\u2019s not to say that you can\u2019t \u201cborrow\u201d ideas from other brands. That is called \u201cinspiration\u201d and let\u2019s face it, basically, every idea you\u2019re ever going to have is pulled from bits and pieces of inspiration you\u2019ve garnered over the years. Visually, this is the way we learn \u2014 seeing something that appeals to us and storing it away in our memory. Every \u201coriginal\u201d idea is a compilation of images you\u2019ve already experienced and logged in your mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how then, can one hope to create a unique logo for their business if nothing is <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">truly<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> unique? By creatively borrowing from those images that appeal to you, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freelogoservices.com\/blog\/2018\/02\/08\/logo-color-psychology-choosing-brand-colors\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(Opens a new window)\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">using psychology to determine the colors that convey your personality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and by choosing fonts that accurately reflect your brand. Rest assured you\u2019ll come up with an idea that\u2019s uniquely you. But where to start?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>When designing a logo, be a borrower<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to find inspiration is to merely look around; see how others before you have done it. If you\u2019re a retail business, walk around town and look at logos of other retailers. If you\u2019re a lawn service, pay attention to the trucks, uniforms, and signs of other landscapers. And don\u2019t be afraid to draw inspiration from logos outside of your industry. Look at big brands, small businesses, industrial and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you do find a design that appeals to you, ask yourself why. Is it the color? The shape? The symmetry? Don\u2019t look at it as a whole, instead pick out the elements that hold the most significant interest to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Find logo design inspiration in unexpected places<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While established brands and logos are great places to start, inspiration can come from many other sources. The more you seek out other influences, the easier it is to avoid plagiarizing another business\u2019 logo. And that even happens to the most prominent brands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2017, for example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2017\/12\/19\/16795334\/kon-apple-lawsuit-app-store-logo-sex-pistols\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(Opens a new window)\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apple was sued by Chinese clothing brand Kon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for trademark infringement. Kon alleges that Apple\u2019s new App Store logo (three sticks with rounded ends that overlap each other to form a triangle) was plagiarized from the logo they\u2019ve owned since 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By seeking out inspiration in surprising places, you can avoid potential legal issues while discovering a whole new way to differentiate your business, and perhaps your entire industry. Pay attention to nature, architecture, fashion, artwork \u2014 solutions often reveal themselves in the most unusual places. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hookandloop.com\/invention-velcro-brand\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(Opens a new window)\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take the invention of Velcro\u00ae<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Invented in the 1940s by George de Mestral, Velcro\u2019s inspiration was drawn from the tiny hooks of cockle-burs that were stuck on his pants and in his dog&#8217;s fur after a hunting trip!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Keep inspiration in mind but out of sight<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/smile.amazon.com\/Trademarks-Symbols-World-Alphabet-Design\/dp\/4760104518?sa-no-redirect=1\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(Opens a new window)\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTrademarks &amp; Symbols of the World: The Alphabet in Design\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been a source of inspiration for designers since 1989. Recently, however, the \u201cinspiration\u201d of a few modern companies has been called into question. Spencer Chen, the VP of Marketing and Business Development for Alibaba, has pointed out the striking similarities between the logos of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@fvo\/your-logo-is-copied-710ac4604258\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(Opens a new window)\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beats by Dre, Medium, Flipboard and Airbnb<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with designs from the 70s and early 80s. Coincidence? Perhaps. But by having a reference book such as this at your table or desk as you work on your design, you\u2019ll inevitably continue to refer to it. Instead, design\u00a0a logo from memory to keep your logo as original as possible, ensuring you avoid:<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Avoid legal trouble<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unknowingly or not, if you end up with a logo design that too closely matches that of another company, you could be sued. Just ask Apple.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Understanding trademark issues<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you plan to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mycorporation.com\/trademarks-copyrights-domain-names\/trademark-application.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(Opens a new window)\" rel=\"noopener\">trademark your logo<\/a> (and why wouldn\u2019t you?), it needs to look original. If your design is too similar to another company\u2019s, your trademark application will be denied resulting in a lot of wasted time and money for your business.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Don&#8217;t confuse the customer<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a small business, your logo needs to work. It needs to convey who you are and what you do, all at a glance. Most importantly, it needs to differentiate you from the competition. If your logo design looks too much like that of the other guy in your industry, potential customers will struggle to separate you from him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your unique logo is out there. Take your time finding it.
